DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A new initiative with a sweet incentive was announced Tuesday morning with Jackson Police. A new yearly prize, called the Community Spirit Award, will be given out to those who show kindness and outreach worthy of celebration. Winners will also be awarded with homemade ice cream. The prize is inspired by Jack and Jerry Smith, two brothers that invited Jackson police captain Sammy Britt in for homemade ice cream when he was a young officer on patrol. Fifty years later, Britt remembers the gesture, and wants to honor those who show the same initiative. “That’s pretty exceptional when someone invites to their table someone invites to their life someone wants to share something with you,” Chief Gill Kendrick with Jackson Police Dept. said. The nomination process for the award began on Tuesday. Nominees must have lived in Jackson-Madison County for at least one year. Applications will be available on line and throughout the city. Applications will be forwarded to Sharon Smith (SSmith@cityofjackson.net) at City Hall. Application deadline is August 1, 2014. The award is sponsored by Jackson-Madison County Public Safety, which includes Emergency Medical, Emergency Management. City Fire Department, County Fire Department, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Madison County Sheriff Department and the Jackson Police Department.
