DOWNTOWN JACKSON — Wednesday marks the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act, and WBBJ talked with one of the most influential groups during that time. Fifty years ago, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The law prohibits discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. Harrell Carter, President of the NAACP Jackson-Madison County, says numerous people participated in sit-ins and the fight for justice in Madison County. “We’ve come a long way,” Carter said. “Each one of our branches have played a significant part in making sure that disparities and discrimination practices are lessened but the job is not finished.” The Civil Rights Act ended the application of Jim Crow laws across the United States.
