Tips to keep food safe during your cookout

NORTH JACKSON — The Fourth of July is one of the biggest cookout days of the year, but sometimes the sun and heat can effect your food in ways that could make you sick. WBBJ spoke to Sharon Thorton, a local registered dietitian, for tips on how to prevent dangers around your holiday food. “So you know you can visually look at your hamburger, but you don’t know internally cooked so getting a thermometer for your meat to be sure you’ve properly cooked [it], Thorton said. Experts also say make sure to keep raw meats separate from other foods and thoroughly wash the utensils handling those meats. Also, never leave any foods out for more than two hours.
