BROWNSVILLE, Tenn.- The race is over, and Brownsville is ending its day with a new leader. Bill Rawls Junior was sworn in as city’s newest mayor at the Criminal Justice Complex in Brownsville late Tuesday afternoon. Rawls defeated mayor Joe Matherne in the June election with 65 percent of the vote. He is the first African American mayor in Brownsville’s history, and is eager to start in this new role. However, he said he does not want to make too many changes too soon. “No, no, I’m not going to make any big changes to begin with. We have to evaluate the situation over the next 90, 120 days. We’ll be evaluating the personnel, trying to get the most efficient way of doing business. We want to run the city like a business,” said Mayor Rawls. Right after being officially sworn in, Rawls led his first city board meeting.
