Heavy rain causes 12 foot deep sinkhole in Bolivar

BOLIVAR, Tenn. — Tate Road, near the intersection of Highway 18, is closed after a 12 foot deep sinkhole swallows a city car while an employee is driving on Wednesday morning. Bolivar mayor Barrett Stevens says Tuesday night’s heavy rain in such a short period of time is to blame. Mayor Stevens says in addition to the sinkhole, several homes and businesses were flooded. So far it’s too early to tell just how much it will all cost. Officials say despite the expensive damage and the extensive time it will take to repair, it could have been worse. The county highway department and city utility department say they’re working together to get the sinkhole repaired and Tate Road back up and running. Officials say they’re hoping to have the road back open by Wednesday of next week.
