Madison County sees record-breaking early voter turnout

WEST JACKSON — The Madison County Election Commission confirms record breaking turnout so far for early voting in Madison County. Cars filed into the parking lot at the Madison County Election Commission Office on Monday for day three of early voting. Celia Clifft said she wants to avoid lines on Election Day. “I decided to come and early vote because I know who I’m gonna vote for and I wanna beat the crowd,” she said. The Madison County Election Commission confirms 921 voters cast ballots Friday, making it a record first day of early voting for the August election. The commission says another 425 voted Saturday, setting another record. “This is a big election,” Clifft said. “There are a lot of important issues that are going on, and so I think people are taking it seriously and they’re getting out to vote.” The Madison County Election Commission says they also brought on extra staff members in order to handle all of the early voters. “We’ve set up as many machines as this building can physically accommodate,” Kim Buckley said, Administrator of Elections at the Madison County Election Commission. Voters want their voice heard. “You can pick the people that you want to represent you,” said Larry Fields, a voter. “Get out there and vote, so that we can be heard,” said Clifft. Early voting runs through Aug. 2. Election Day is Aug. 7. In Madison County, people can early vote Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday. Voters must have a photo ID to cast a ballot.
