More EMS workers needed or residents could suffer

BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — Haywood County ambulance services could be slower getting to residents after Haywood Park Hospital closes July 31. The Director of Brownsville-Haywood County Ambulance Authority, Jimmy Studdard, said this fact is why it is imperative additional workers are hired. “The back of the ambulance will be the emergency room,” Studdard said, adding that it’s a lot of pressure on his employees. Studdard said he asked the county commission to add at least seven paramedics. He said because the county’s only hospital is closing, his employees will drive at least 30 miles to the nearest ER. “We need some hospitals around here so people will not have to go to Jackson or Memphis,” Mitchell Shirley, a Haywood County resident said. Studdard said driving farther to the nearest ER will keep his drivers on the road longer and without additional paramedics, residents may have to wait longer during medical emergencies. County officials said the seven extra employees will cost an additional $330,000 a year. Until a budget is approved, Studdard said he will rotate part-time workers, but even that could become costly. Despite the costs, Studdard said he’s hopeful the commissioners will make the right decision in August.
