Judge orders mental evaluation for teen charged in deadly shooting

EAST JACKSON — The teen accused of shooting and killing another teen and injuring a 21-year-old on Sunday made his first appearance in court. The 17-year-old suspected gunman appeared in juvenile court before Judge Christy Little for his detention hearing on Tuesday afternoon. Judge Little ruled he must stay in custody and ordered he undergo a mental evaluation. The suspect has not been charged as an adult, but is facing counts of first degree murder and attempted first degree murder. At approximately 5:07 p.m. Sunday, police were called about two people shot outside Parkway East Apartments at 33 Carver Avenue. Shomari Peterson, Jr., 17, and a 21-year-old man, both of Jackson, were struck. Peterson died from his injuries. The 21-year-old man remains at Jackson General Hospital in stable condition. Police are not identifying the 21-year-old man for safety concerns.
