Crockett Co now patrols in military hummers

CROCKETT COUNTY, Tenn. — The Crockett County sheriff’s department said they can now respond to emergencies safely during severe weather, with two new military hummers. “It’s pretty exciting to get one of them and drive them,” Sergeant Robert Howell with the sheriff’s department said. He said he applied for the half ton vehicles earlier this year and all the department had to pay for was the paperwork. He said when he applied he had to explain how the department would put the hummers to work. “In inclement weather, storms with trees over the road, water over the road, and off-road activities, searches that are off the road,” Sgt. Howell said. The sheriff’s department said they can use the hummers to haul patients or supplies. Now authorities can respond to any emergency in any kind of weather. “I feel pretty excited about having the vehicles because they can do so much more than just a typical four wheel drive,” Howell said. He said no matter how long they have them, the hummers are still property of the government. “They’re not ours, but they’re ours to use for eternity. We can keep them as long as we want to. But if we don’t want them anymore we have to give them back to the government,” he said. Howell said the officers will be able to patrol in the hummers after they paint them to look like normal cars. He said they will maintain them using grant money. The hummers came from Fort Campbell in Kentucky.
