Council dedicates street to Jackson civil rights activist

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — The Jackson City Council met Tuesday at city hall and approved the dedication of Monroe Street in East Jackson to Isaiah W. Savage Jr. The street will be dedicated as Isaiah W. Savage, Jr. Boulevard. Savage fought for desegregation and was a civil rights activist in Jackson from the 1950s to the 1970s. Savage was a teacher at Jackson Central-Merry High School for more than 30 years and was a graduate of Lane College. He was also a war veteran. The street will have honorary signs on both ends to memorialize Savage.
