DYER, Tenn. — A beautification project is underway in Dyer, trying to bring the once buzzing main street back to life. Dawn Siler teaches art in Gibson County and has lived in Dyer all her life. Now she’s using her skills to paint new life to downtown. “As an artist living in Dyer, I’ve noticed the improvements that we could do to the town,” Siler said. “It’s a great community, a great place to live.” Siler has been working on a mural on the back of her mother-in-law’s downtown shop. It’s not much to look at now, but she say it will soon bring color to the city’s past and present. “I was going for the trains because this used to be an old train depot,” Siler said. “I also want to incorporate some of the businesses in town.” The mural isn’t the only upgrade downtown Dyer is getting. In a few months, what is now a pile of dirt will become the city’s newest green space. “We’re working on a green space to enhance this are,” Dyer mayor Chris Younger said. “Then hopefully we can start moving to other parts of the town.” Mayor Younger says these improvements are all part of a grand image for the city and hopes more people will get involved. “It’s a long time coming,” Mayor Younger said. “We’ve wanted to do this for a while and I feel like it’s time. There are people starting to get interested.” Siler says the community has already come together, donating paint other supplies for the project, but hopes more will follow suit. “It’s easier once you see one person making a movement or volunteering and then you can bring in others,” Siler said. Mayor Younger say’s he’s also forming a beautification committee to help continue the improvements. Siler says she hopes to have the entire mural finished by this winter.
