DOWNTOWN JACKSON — The state approved a plan to form a committee to tackle the issue of the overcrowding at the Madison County Jail, according to Sheriff John Mehr. Mehr, Captain Tom Rudder and County Mayor Jimmy Harris all traveled to Nashville Wednesday to present their plan to the state. Because of the approval, the jail will keep its accreditation, Mehr said. Mehr also said the special jail committee, formed last month, will meet periodically to discuss how to further resolve the issue. The first meeting for the special committee has not yet been set, but it will closely resemble the schedule set by the monthly county commission meetings, Mehr said.
