CORINTH, Miss. — Some gun stores in Mississippi saw an increase in sales this weekend because of a new holiday. The state’s first gun sales tax holiday started Friday Sept. 5 and ran through Sunday Sept. 7. Sammy Green owns Big Boys Pawn, Gun and Gold in Corinth, Mississippi and says this weekend was a lot like neighbors. He says during this second amendment sales tax holiday his sales doubled, if not more. “We had six people working and didn’t have enough,” Green said. Across town at The Gun Shop the same couldn’t be said. Rod Scott owns the store and says he only saw a small increase, “probably maybe ten percent, but not a tremendous amount.” During this holiday the state’s seven percent sales tax was removed on guns, ammunition, archery equipment and some hunting supplies. While this was a weekend long holiday, many stores kept their doors closed on Sunday. “This is the first time we’ve ever opened on a Sunday. We just did it because of the tax free weekend,” Green said. Tennessee’s sales tax is nearly 3% higher than Mississippi’s so with zero tax on gun-related items people from other states headed to the Magnolia State. “We had customers I know from Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama,” Scott said. Green says his store was crazy over the last few days, but it was worth it for the business and the customers that saved a couple hundred dollars. Mississippi’s governor signed the second amendment sales tax holiday into law in April, but this is the first time customers were able to take advantage.
