DOWNTOWN JACKSON, Tenn. — Two witnesses in the June 12 shooting on East End Dr. where a mother and her infant son were injured took the stand Thursday. It was part of a preliminary hearing for Kijuan Murphy who is one of the two suspects charged in the case. Murphy appeared in Jackson City Court three months after the shooting he was charged in connection with. He faces seven counts of attempted first degree murder. Murphy’s attorney, Kortney Simmons, said the case’s weaknesses are two of the witnesses who took the stand. “Their stories completely contradicted each other. One said that the person was right there in front. The other person said he was on the other side of the car,” Simmons said. One witness is Murphy’s cousin who testified he did not see Murphy shooting that night. The other witness testified he did see Murphy in the yard shooting into the house. Police asked that WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News not show the witnesses on camera for their own safety. A mother and her then four-month-old son were injured the night of the shootings. “Mr. Murphy hopes that everything is okay with her, but again we don’t have any updates on her condition,” Simmons said. Simmons does not feel the state has a strong case. “I think it’s a little questionable at this point in time specifically to Mr. Murphy I think it’s a little questionable,” said Simmons. After Thursday’s testimonies the judge sent the case on to the grand jury. The other suspect charged in the case is Damian McFarland, 19, who faces six counts of attempted murder. McFarland’s case was bound over to the grand jury in June.
