HARDEMAN COUNTY, Tenn. — The man who was killed Thursday in a Toone traffic accident involving a dump truck was texting while driving when he crossed lanes, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Charles Burgess, 47, of Whiteville, was driving a 1995 Ford Explorer east on Highway 100 when his vehicle crossed the center line and struck a gravel truck head on, according to a preliminary accident report from the THP. Burgess did not survive. It is unknown if he was wearing a seat belt. The truck driver was uninjured in the crash and was wearing a seat belt. Neither speed nor alcohol was determined to be a factor in the crash, according to the report. Deputies said the accident occurred about 3:30 p.m. Both vehicles fell several feet down a ravine. Crews worked for hours to pull up the dump truck, which was full of gravel.
