MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Relief is on the way for West Tennessee drivers with changes coming to the roads in Madison County. TDOT announced a plan Tuesday to alleviate congestion on the Highway 45 Bypass. With more than 45,000 vehicles passing through the area each day, drivers say they are relieved. “The traffic backups, you can’t get over here to eat, it’s just been an incredible nightmare as far as the one-way signs, I’m just excited,” driver Helen Todd explained. Drivers turning out onto the 45 Bypass from the Casey Jones Village area must turn right, and then make a U-turn to get onto Interstate 40. Soon, that will change, and drivers will be able to turn left as well as part of the state’s $6 million improvement plan. The state also announced a $68 million that will widen I-40 to six lanes through Jackson and redesign the I-40/North Highland interchange. “Jackson’s always been a large thoroughfare for truck and car traffic alone, and the widening of I-40 there is going to be a large help,” Nichole Lawrence, Community Relations Officer for TDOT explained. Lawrence said it is important state and city leaders work together to meet the needs of the community. TDOT said the construction on the Bypass will start sometime this fall, and the project to expand I-40 will begin in about a year. TDOT could not say exactly how long the projects will take to complete.
