TOONE, Tenn. — Hardeman County Mayor Jimmy Sain said in a matter of days dozens of unemployed residents in his county will be working. This after Chemring, formerly known as Kilgore, a well-known manufacturing plant, announced this week they are looking to expand. “I’m excited to work with existing industries,” Sain said. This year the plant that produces military flares had to lay off several employees after two unplanned explosions, one in February that claimed the life of a Hardeman County man. But officials said business is picking up and most of those employees are back at work. Now managers are looking to add to their staff, something Sain said is needed. “We have so many young people who have to move off to find a job,” Sain said. The unemployment rate in Hardeman County is 10.2 percent, three percent higher than the state average. Sain said the opportunities at Chemring will help boost the economy. The jobs pay well above minimum wage, with most positions starting at $12 to $14 per hour. “We want people to live here, work here and buy things here,” Sain said. “That turns over so much money in the community.” “It’s an economic plus for Hardeman County because they already employee over 500 people,” Toone Mayor Joe Jones said. County officials are working closely with the company by submitting applications and even screening potential employees before sending them to managers. Sain said he hopes to help fill the positions within the next few weeks. Interested residents can contact the mayor’s office for more information.
