WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn. — The Weakley County Sheriff’s Department is getting an extra pop of color during the month of October. All officers will be using pink handcuffs starting October 1 for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Captain Terry McDade with the Weakley County Sheriff’s Department said a while back he was brainstorming what else they could do for breast cancer awareness. Six months later his department has nearly 60 pairs of pink cuffs ready to be used. McDade explained why this means a lot to him. “A couple years ago my cousin I’m really close to, she had a double mastectomy.” He said he thought this idea would be a fun way to support Breast Cancer Awareness during the month of October. McDade had the idea, but he did not know how he would come up with the money to buy all the cuffs. That is where Patrolman Gary Eddings from the Dresden Police Department came in. “So I said I knew the woman who went to church with me, Janet Elliot who was with the Relay For Life and they raise a lot of money.” The MTD Products “Relay For Life” team came up with half of the money. “And then at that time me and Terry just ended up saying we would pay for the rest of them just to make this thing a go,” Eddings said. Eddings also has a personal connection to the disease. “My grandmother had breast cancer also so anyways it made me get a little more involved in it.” In addition to the pink cuffs the officers will wear pink ribbons on their uniforms and have donation buckets at each department and Dresden City Hall. The officers said they want the community to see their other side. “We’re just trying to let everybody know that we may be macho sometimes but we can also carry pink handcuffs,” Eddings told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News. McDade said if it goes well this year he hopes they will be able to continue doing it every year. Janet Elliot of Relay For Life said all money raised from the donation bins around Weakley County will go to the American Cancer Society.
