Two new K9s to join Jackson Police Department

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn.–Two new K9s will soon join the Jackson Police Department. The department lost one of its dogs to cancer this summer and another will soon retire. Sgt. Brandon Moss trained with his partner, a K9 named Kyra, on Wednesday. The two live and work together. “The handler is with their police dog probably more than what they’re with their family,” Moss said. Two new K9s will soon join the force. Moss said the dogs come from Europe and cost the department about $12,000 each. “A lot of people think well that’s a lot of money for a dog, but then you get eight to 10 years of service life out of the dog before we have to retire them, so really you get a lot of work for that initial investment,” he said. Moss said the dogs will arrive in Evansville, Indiana on Tuesday. Two officers will travel there and spend six to eight weeks training with the K9s. “We’ll be doing the obedience and agility courses and the box courses, and we’ll be doing detection type stuff as well,” Officer Devin Bray said. The K9s will be able to sniff out drugs and explosives as well as track suspects. “A lot of times these dogs track and find bad guys that wouldn’t be found otherwise,” Moss said. Once the two new K9s complete training, the department will have four K9s total. Moss expects the new dogs to hit the streets of Jackson in November.
