Man charged with striking child with video game controller

WEST JACKSON — A man is charged with child abuse after allegedly hitting a child in the face with a video game controller. Deputies responded Saturday to a domestic disturbance where a man was accused of assaulted an 8-year-old boy at a residence on Brooks Lane, according to court papers. A woman told deputies she heard arguing from the play room, and her grandchildren said James M. Johnson Jr. had struck the boy in the face with a game controller. The boy was seen to have a swollen left eye with a small cut ,and he told deputies that Johnson hit him with the controller, the report states. Deputies spoke with Johnson at a shed behind the residence where he admitted to hitting the boy with the controller and said “that’s how we play,” according to the documents. The report goes on to say Johnson was intoxicated and was the primary aggressor. Johnson is being held on $7,500 bond and is scheduled to appear 1 p.m. Oct. 9 for a preliminary hearing.
