MIDTOWN JACKSON — A Jackson school is among six in the state to receive national honors this week. Madison Academic Magnet High School has been recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School. “The students have worked really hard,” Principal Janice Epperson said. “The teachers have provided a very rigorous curriculum and brought that to life, and on top of that, we tried to give the leadership skills and the support they have needed to make sure that this happened.” The honor was announced Tuesday by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. “These great schools are fulfilling the promise of American education — that all students, no matter their name or zip code, can flourish when schools provide safe, creative and challenging learning environments,” Duncan said in a statement. Schools are presented with the honor based on overall academic excellence or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups, according to a release from the U.S. Department of Education. The Department will honor 287 public and 50 private schools at a recognition ceremony on Nov. 10-11 in Washington, D.C., according to the release. The other recognized Tennessee schools are Foothills Elementary School in Maryville, Hillsboro Elementary-Middle School in Franklin, Kenrose Elementary School in Brentwood, Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet-Pearl High School in Nashville and Trinity Elementary School in Franklin. In its 32-year history, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed this coveted award on just under 7,900 of America’s schools, the release also states.
