Officials: bullying has no age limit

JACKSON, Tenn.– The CDC says 1 in 3 children are bullied during the school year. October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Experts said many have been a victim or witnessed bullying. While many think school is the only place for the tough teasing, some said home is actually where this behavior begins. “A lot of times, kids are bullying because they’re being bullied at home too,” said Chelsea Brandon, the community health development coordinator with Jackson-Madison County Regional Health Department. David Woolfork Jr. is a father to three girls. He said he encourages his daughters to stand up against bullies. “I tell them you know if they see somebody being bullied, stick up for them because it could just as easy happen to them,” he said.” Brandon said parents can take simple steps to tell if their child may be tormented by their peers. “Get them to open up a little bit everyday about how their days been. Just get them talking. If they do that everyday, then they will pick up if something is not going right,” she said. Some experts said it is easy to assume that only children are targeted by bullies, but they said bullying has no age limit. “Just adjusting to life can be a little difficult for some and they take it out on others,” said Brandon. The CDC says about 64 percent of students report being bullied more than once.
