Car crashes into Dyer Co. Clerk’s office

DYERSBURG, Tenn. — An elderly driver slams through the Dyer County Clerk’s office, costing the county thousands, and it is all caught on surveillance video. County Clerk Diane Moore said the office is still on edge after the ordeal. “So we started screaming and running to see what was going on, and we saw the car coming through the window,” Moore said. She said this is the second time this has happened in three months. “I really thought it was an out-of-the-ordinary thing,” Moore said. “I didn’t expect it to get this bad.” According to the police report, this time a 91-year-old woman was parking in a handicap spot in front of the building when she reportedly hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. “We were just a normal day, and all of the sudden we heard glass breaking, and it sounded like it went on forever,” Moore said. County officials said they are going to have to rebuild the front of the building. The estimated cost is $30,000. “We don’t have anything to stop the vehicles from coming through since they put the parking places out here,” Moore said. “Handicapped parking places there are no curbs — they can just come on in.” Moore said in front of the office is a newly reconstructed sidewalk, and if they had curbs maybe it would have stopped this from happening. Bob Goodwin said he is friends with the driver. “This is easy to do. I’ve done it myself,” Goodwin said. “If you’ve got on different type shoes, you hit your foot on the accelerator and part on the brake.” County officials said they are not sure how long the repairs will take, but they have boarded up the building with plywood for the time being. Police said the driver is not facing any charges at this time.
