Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Week: Roberts

LEXINGTON, Tenn. — It is time to introduce this week’s Educator of the Week from Pin Oak Elementary School in Lexington, presented by the Tennessee Education Lottery. Miranda Roberts says pushing her first-grade students to grow and identifying their needs is important in building a proper foundation to learn. “I think that it’s just very important that I’m here for them,” Roberts said. “That I’m helping them grow and learn as 6- and 7-year-olds. At the same time, they help me grow and learn as a teacher because every year is different.” Roberts has been teaching for more than five years and is an alumna of the University of Tennessee at Martin along with Bethel University where she attained her master’s degree in education. “I actually went to school here, so some of the teachers that I’m working with actually were my teachers when I went here,” Roberts said. “So it’s definitely a blessing to get to work with them after they have been the ones to teach me.” Roberts says the job has its challenges, especially when you have a variety of students who may learn faster or slower than others. “I think the biggest challenge is their reading levels are so spread out,” Roberts said. “I have some that struggle to read what we read now. Then I have some reading on second- and third-grade levels. So sometimes it’s hard to balance out.” Roberts says she hopes her kids continue to believe they can do their best, and she uses smart technology to enhance the learning process. “Technology is very important. We use the mini laptops quite often,” Roberts said. “We have different programs on the computers that help them.” Roberts will be eligible for the state-wide Tennessee Education Lottery Educator of the Month award.
