EAST JACKSON — Thousands of people put on their walking shoes and lots of pink Saturday morning for Jackson’s third annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. Organizers said they are happy more and more people participate each year. “I’m a survivor,” Laura Chism said. “I’m so happy.” Chism was 29 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and was one of the many survivors at Saturday’s walk. “This is my first Making Strides,” Chism said. “So I’m just super happy, because I’m always working or my body hurts or something.” Susan Morris started this walk in Jackson with her husband and explained why the support means a lot to her. “I’m a five-year breast cancer survivor,” Morris said. “To see all the survivors and all the support out here today — it’s just overwhelming.” Lisa Garey is currently fighting breast cancer and said she has done this walk before and never thought she would be the one that people are walking for. “We just thought we would come out here and support, and it does take on a whole new meaning now that I have been diagnosed,” Garey said. Those currently battling breast cancer explained what this event means to them. “It’s a lot of unsurety, so being here and seeing these people support you, it makes you feel good,” Gina Hartley said. “Oh it’s amazing, it’s amazing,” Garey said. “It brings tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.” Breast cancer runs in Gina Hartley’s family, and she said events like this are a step in the right direction. Chism, just 29 when she was diagnosed, wants people to know one thing. “Do your self exams, because I found mine myself,” Chism said. Susan Morris, co-chair of the walk, said this year around 2,500 walkers came out to support the cause. Morris said she expects to beat last year’s funds and raise close to $200,000.
