EAST JACKSON — To spotlight the nearly 300,000 Kindergarten through twelfth-grade students responsible for taking care of themselves after school, Oct. 23 is Lights on Afterschool Day. The event is an effort by the Afterschool Alliance to gather people in communities across the state to offer more opportunities for students after the final school bell of the day. “Some of our parents work late, and so that’s a safe environment for students to stay in while the parents may be at work,” said Tisa Day, principal of Isaac Lane Technology Magnet Elementary School. Research shows students who participate in after-school programs have better attendance, grades and test scores compared to those who do not. They also have lower instances of drug and alcohol use.
