DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A candidate for the 27th State Senate race has decided to shift gears and instead throw his hat into the ring to announce his candidacy for mayor of Jackson. Early Monday evening, Independent candidate Dr. James Baxter announced he is dropping out of the race for state senate and throwing his support behind Democratic candidate Randy Lamb. Lamb said he is grateful for Baxter’s endorsement. Baxter said he has been mulling over his decision to drop out of the state senate race for some time and has decided to support Lamb. Along with Lamb, Republican candidate Ed Jackson and Constitution Party candidate Tim York are on the ballot for the 27th State Senate race on Nov. 4. Baxter’s name will remain on the ballot even though he has announced he is dropping out as a candidate. Along with Baxter, incumbent Mayor Jerry Gist and current State Senator Lowe Finney have announced they too are seeking the office of Jackson mayor in next year’s city-wide election. Baxter recently was a candidate for county clerk in the Madison County election in August.
