JACKSON, Tenn. — The University of Memphis-Lambuth Campus is looking to the future. Wednesday, officials unveiled the final steps of the university’s new master plan. For the first time since the University of Memphis took over, Lambuth now has a plan for the future. Over the next 20 years campus leaders say they have some big plans. “I anticipate that at some point over the next 20 years. We’ll have 5 to 10,000 students on this campus,” Lambuth Vice Provost Niles Reddick said. Stepping stones for growth laid out by university officials show what is next for the university. “They’ve really done a lot already and it’s just going to continue,” campus planner Neal Kessler said. “Over the next few years they’ll have short term, mid term, and long term projects.” Projects that include everything from more parking to security upgrades and even new buildings. “There are some residence halls on campus that will be built as enrollment grows as well as a new science center,” Kessler said. Residents who live in the LANA area said the University of Memphis has brought a lot to the community since taking over. “They’ve been a great asset to the community,” Dan Nichols said. “It could have really been devastating if no one had taken it over.” Officials who drafted the new master plan said input from residents was key. “We like to bring ideas and ear what people like,” Kessler said. “Then it’s really their master plan.” With new lighting, sidewalks, and signs already installed around campus residents are excited for what is next. “I can’t imagine them not continuing to develop,” Nichols said. “I hope their master plan develops this community into a fantastic area.” The final stages of the plan will be dawn up over the next few months. Campus officials said they hope to begin construction projects as early as next year.
