GIBSON COUNTY, Tenn — Tonya Jones runs a salon in Jackson, but has a part time job at the Gibson County Special School District. “I got a job in the Gibson County Special School District,” Tonya told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Friday at her shop in West Jackson, “so even though we live in Madison County, my children are able to go to Gibson County schools. The newly released report cards for districts across the state show the Gibson County Special School District earned an “A” overall. Reading was their lowest score with a “C”, but that was brought up by an “A” in math, and 39 percent of students who qualified for the HOPE Scholarship, that’s 3 percent above the state average. Eddie Pruett, the Gibson County Special School District’s Director of Schools, said this report card did not just happen. “Anytime you know how much hard work was put into something, its good when you see results like that,” said Pruett. While students in the Gibson County Special School District are getting one of the highest rated educations in West Tennessee, the Pruett tells WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News that its up to everyone to keep those standards high. “Focus in on what is it that’s creating those results,” Pruett said, “and make sure that we hone in on those and then some of the extraneous stuff we kind of let it go by the wayside.” Ultimately, Pruett credits his students for being willing to learn, and teachers and parents willing to push them and make sacrifices like Tonya Jones. “It means the world to me. for their future, for their college and for the rest of their life,” Jones said.
