JACKSON, Tenn. — Wednesday is National Eating Healthy Day, and the American Heart Association is asking people to double down on their fruit intake. Americans typically only consume half of their recommended daily servings of fruit. For the average adult consuming 2,000 calories a day, that means four and a half cups of fruits and vegetables per day. Christy Futrell, regional director for the American Heart Association, says she hopes the message of the day will inspire people to make even small changes in their eating habits. “They’ll think about their diet, they’ll look at what they’re eating and just change at least one or two things,” Futrell said. “Just start somewhere.” More than 80 percent of risk factors for heart disease and stroke are preventable through healthy behaviors, including a healthy consumption of fruit.
