JACKSON, Tenn. — Winter is coming and that means cold mornings outside for kids waiting for the school bus. WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News spoke with a physician on what parents need to know to keep their children safe. Doctors said you need to make sure your kids are properly bundled. The areas that could get frost bite need to be covered including hands, face and feet. Also, make sure to limit how long your children are standing outside because your body will lose heat faster than it can produce it. And make sure your kids know that if they start shivering their body is trying to generate more heat. “90 percent of body heat is lost through skin so common sense hat, scarf cover up your face layered clothing is particularly effective and water resistant shoes,” Dr. Peter Gardner with Physicians Quality Care said. Dr. Gardner also wants parents to know that mittens are more effective than gloves, a fact he said most do not know.
