JACKSON, Tenn.–Schools across West Tennessee recognized servicemen and servicewomen on Tuesday for Veterans Day. “I always think about the ones that died and the men that didn’t come back, the women that didn’t come back,” Steven Weaver said, a veteran. Weaver served as a United States Navy physician during the first Iraq War and spent four years with the U.S. Marine Corps. Tuesday he talked to a gym full of students at Jackson Christian. “If there’s another war, they’re the ones that are gonna serve,” Weaver said. “They’re gonna be the wall between evil and us. I wanted them to understand that they’re gonna be the veterans one day.” Jackson Christian hosts a ceremony every year honoring veterans. “Veterans played an important part in this country,” senior John Pate said. “They’re the whole reason that we have our freedom.” Jackson Christian said it is important for students to understand what veterans did for the nation. “For some of them, it maybe the future path that they take and we can show them what an honorable path it is,” Jackson Christian Director of Advancement Chris Ramey said. County and city leaders attended a program at Rose Hill Middle where students carried American flags and remembered veterans. Weaver appreciates the recognition. “You don’t even know how much,” he said. “Means a great deal.” Ramey said Jackson Christian will continue to host the Veterans Day program every year. Jackson-Madison County Schools said Liberty Technology Magnet High School and Madison Academic High School also hosted Veterans Day events on Tuesday.
