JMCSS reaction to proposed Common Core repeal
Two Republican state senators have filed legislation to repeal the state’s Common Core standards, the Associated Press has reported. The measure would set up a so-called Tennessee Standards Commission that would recommend to the State Board of Education standards to be used in the state’s K-12 public schools. Senate Education Committee Chairwoman Dolores Gresham and Senate Government Operations Committee Chairman Mike Bell say the move is designed to ensure Tennessee students continue to improve by applying the highest standards, while exerting state control over education. The Jackson-Madison County School Board released a statement Monday from Superintendent Verna Ruffin regarding the proposed changes: “”We understand Governor Haslam has called for a review of the standards and Jackson-Madison County School System supports all efforts to create and maintain a focus on high standards for teaching and learning. Seeking input from stakeholders and clearly defining expectations for student learning is an important step in assuring all children learn regardless of their location. We look forward to contributing to the standards dialogue as decisions are made in Tennessee to continue the course towards high academic achievement and college and career opportunities for all students.” Verna Ruffin, Ed.
