Man accused in Martin beating death has hearing reset

WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn. — A man accused of beating a fellow resident to death at a mental health home in Martin had his preliminary hearing reset Wednesday. The hearing for Marcus Freeman, 32, of Memphis, could not be held Wednesday because his court-ordered mental evaluation has not been completed. Freeman was appointed a public defender at his arraignment last month. A judge ordered Freeman be sent to Pathways Mental health Center for a forensic evaluation. Prosecutors say the evaluation should not take much longer. “It’s been partially completed,” Assistant District Attorney Colin Johnson said. “The second part of the evaluation is to be done soon is what I’ve been told, and the preliminary hearing will follow the completion of the evaluation.” Freeman is charged with second-degree murder in the beating death of Ollie Grandberry, 59, also of Memphis, at the Adkins House. Freeman is scheduled to return Dec. 17 to Weakley County general sessions court for his preliminary hearing.
