Salvation Army lets the bell ringing begin

JACKSON, Tenn. — The Salvation Army’s annual kettle bell campaign is ringing in the holidays. The money raised is used to support the Salvation Army’s year-round operations. “First, we pay off Christmas and then try to make it stretch through the whole season,” said Major Jayne Brewster with Salvation Army-Jackson. “When we’re done with Christmas, we still have social services. We still need to help people with rent, utilities, with food. So this money goes long into the year for that.” With signature bells in hand and red buckets to fill, volunteers with the kettle bells will be out through the Christmas holiday at stores such as Kroger, Walmart and Hobby Lobby. Brewster says more volunteers are needed. If interested, call The Salvation Army at 731-422-1271 and ask for Debbie. Officials say last year they brought in more than $100,000 from the campaign. “It sounds like a lot when you hear that big number, but really when you think about it, it doesn’t stretch as far as you’d want it to when you consider the whole operation of the Salvation Army and all the things that we do,” Brewster said.
