Woman wins $50,000, putting toward cancer treatment

CAMDEN, Tenn. — A West Tennessee woman wins big with one lucky ticket. Currently battling cancer, Madalene Shiley said she believes her luck has turned around. “I’m still in shock,” Shiley said. “I still don’t believe it.” Shiley is now $50,000 richer. “I didn’t tell anyone,” Shiley said. “I didn’t even tell my husband for 2 days.” For the past few weeks, Shiley has been undergoing cancer treatment while also being flooded with expensive bills. “I didn’t know where I was going to come up with $3,800 for my chemo,” Shiley said. “That’s almost like a down payment for a car.” She won $50,000 by playing the “Explore The Store” game at Fred’s Super Dollar, where customers get tickets for items they purchase. “It’s basically like a scratch-off ticket, like a lottery ticket,” AJ Zyla said. “They scratch the ticket off, and they could win prizes.” Zyla said most of the people who received one of these tickets did not even bother to scratch it off, simply throwing it away. But Shiley said she saved every one of them. “I was picking the tickets up on the ground where people were throwing them away,” Shiley said. And it could have been one of those thrown-away treasures that brought Shiley so much luck. “I truly hope that it continues in that direction for her,” Zyla said. “She’s a great customer of mine.” Shiley has lived in Camden for the past 7 years and said she does not expect to stop shopping at Fred’s anytime soon. “We’ll definitely come back here to Fred’s,” Shiley said. “Looking for that next chance to win.” Shiley won the grand prize out of 600 Fred’s stores across the South.
