Bolivar to take guns, give gift cards in exchange

BOLIVAR, Tenn. — Hardeman County officials came together to stop the rise in shootings in the Bolivar area. There newest idea to stop the shootings is exchanging guns for gift cards. Hardeman County Mayor Jimmy Sain along with Bolivar City Mayor Barrett Stevens, announced a gun swap will occur December 13 in Bolivar. Residents will be able to pull up to Bolivar’s National Guard Armory where they will be to hand their guns to Church leaders and will receive a gift card from Walmart. The gift cards will range from $25 to $150 and are meant to be an extra incentive for those considering to get rid of their guns. “We want to get the guns that are ending up in the wrong hands, off the streets,” said Mayor Stevens. The idea was brought to the officials by Pleasant Grove and Dixie Baptist Church, who will be the ones taking in the guns. The guns will then be handed over to law enforcement officials. No names or faces will be recorded when collecting the guns. “We hope this can be a step in the right direction, and build communication between the police and the community,” Mayor Stevens said.
