Man shot, robbed after trying to hitch a ride

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Investigators said a victim was in Madison County for work, but ended up stranded then running for his life Monday night. “By the time he wanted to do something and get away, it was too late,” Sheriff John Mehr said. Sheriff Mehr said a violent encounter Monday night started at Love’s Truck Stop in east Madison County. He said the victim was dropping off a car for the company he works for, and he was supposed to get a ride back to Memphis. “It was not there so he started looking for someone to get him back to Memphis, because he could not get a hold of the person that would be there to carry him back,” Sheriff Mehr explained. Mehr said 2 men overheard him talking and offered to help – $100 for a ride back to Memphis. The incident started at the truck stop, which is about 30 minutes away from the location the victim was first picked up, and they ended on a stretch of Betty Manley Road. “They got him out of the car, robbed him of his money, his phone, other items, and shot him,” Mehr said. Neighbors said the victim ran to several houses after being shot several more times asking for help. One neighbor called 911, but residents were too on edge to talk on camera. The victim was taken to Jackson-Madison County General Hospital by ambulance, and later transported to Memphis. Officials say the man is in stable condition. Sheriff Mehr said there are two suspects in custody
