Woman in court on gun, drug charges after traffic stop

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A woman was in Jackson City Court Monday on firearm and drug charges stemming from a search of her vehicle after a traffic stop. Kimberly Latoya Sykes faces charges of unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, drug possession charges with intent for resale and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to an affidavit. Police stopped a car Sykes was driving for making an improper turn near the intersection of Highway 45 Bypass and Old Hickory Boulevard, the document states. Police say a strong odor of marijuana was coming from inside the vehicle. Upon a probable cause search, police found a loaded Smith & Wesson .40-caliber pistol under the passenger seat, two small bags of crack cocaine, marijuana, digital scales with marijuana residue and a Xanax pill in a container found in Sykes’ jacket pocket, according to the affidavit.
