JACKSON, Tenn. — It is something many would call private, but Monday Lane College hosted a World AIDS Day event to draw attention to the issue. A news conference was held Monday morning at the Cyber Café on the college campus. The Madison County Health Department hosted free HIV screenings as well. A concert was held Monday night in the McClure Auditorium with special guests and singers. Students said it is an important issue that often gets overlooked. “We need them to be aware because we don’t need them spreading it,” said Chelsea Jones, Lane College’s Health Ambassador. “We need everybody to know their status, so I think it’s a topic that needs to be discussed.” The Department of Health said there are about 20 million new cases of STDs in the United States each year.
