HARDIN COUNTY, Tenn.– With the holiday season here, many West Tennesseans have already or nearly finished setting up their Christmas trees. What many may not know, is that a Christmas tree can spark at any time, possibly destroying a home, or taking a life. Firefighters from Hardin County set a Christmas tree on fire Saturday, showing how quickly a tree can catch on fire and destroy a room. “A dry tree will go up in flames and fully involve a room in less than a minute. A moist tree will take several minutes,” Chief Melvin Martin said. The U.S. Fire Administration says 1 in every 40 Christmas tree fires results in death. Almost one in every three of the fires, start due to an electrical problem. “Be very careful around a Christmas tree, keep it watered. always make sure you have good lights and the extension cords are not overloaded,” Martin said. Firefighters encourage consumers to buy LED lights because they give off a cooler temperature and are more environmentally friendly.
