Study: 1 in 4 police officers are minorities

JACKSON, Tenn.- A recently released study found nationally, one in four police officers are minorities. Jackson reflects that figure, with 24 percent of the department made up of minorities. Officer Darrell Listenbee is a patrol officer for the Jackson Police Department. He’s one of 32 African Americans assigned to Jackson’s Patrol Division. It is made up of 137 officers. He said more minorities should aspire to a career in the force regardless of the stigma. “When I applied for it, I didn’t apply because this person thought this way about it. I applied because deep down inside that’s what I wanted to do,” said Officer Listenbee. City figures show there are 219 commissioned Jackson police officers. If you are interested in becoming an officer, contact the Human Resources department at Jackson City Hall (731) 425-2489.
