MEMPHIS — IKEA is coming to Memphis. The Swedish furniture company confirmed in a statement Monday it will open its first store in the Bluff City, and construction is set to start in 2016. The company said it has 40 stores in the U.S. The closest ones to Memphis are in Atlanta and Frisco, Texas. It also has a store under construction in St. Louis. Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell says IKEA has shined a spotlight on Memphis communities. “They reach the conclusion that Memphis is the place to be,” Luttrell said. “Folks, it’s a compliment to every one of you who contribute the the greatness of our community.” The retailer says the store will increase its presence in the Southeast. The Memphis location will be the company’s 41st store in the country.
