JACKSON, Tenn — Dozens came out to a benefit concert at Northside High School on Saturday evening, to help families hit by hard times during the holidays. The King family said they lost nearly all of their belongings in a house fire December 12th. Mirriam King said her son is in the choir, and she was touched by the community’s show of support during her family’s tough time. “It’s just an overwhelming feeling of so much love that’s being shown to us. It helps encourage us to keep on pushing,” King said. Organizers said students, parents, school faculty, and members from local churches donated items and funds.. School officials said one of their students came up the idea for the event. Jamarius Johnson, senior, said he’s friends with King’s son, and he couldn’t stay silent while someone suffered. “I know for myself everybody’s not fortunate. I know if I have it to see somebody else who doesn’t have it, that kind of gets to me,” Johnson said. Johnson explained those going through hurdles in life don’t have to go through them alone. School officials said all the proceeds from the benefit will go toward families in need, and they’re hoping its success will lead to it becoming an annual event.
