SOUTH JACKSON — The annual Chipping of the Green has begun as officials work to take care of Jackson’s leftover Christmas trees. Residents dropped off their trees Tuesday at the Jackson Fire Department Training Center near the fairgrounds. Soon, the trees will be ground up, turned into wood chips and bagged for pick-up. Officials say they are excited about the time, resources and much-needed space the program can save the city. “With keeping them out of the landfill, it saves space in the landfill for the future,” Keep Jackson Beautiful director Jodi Jacobs said. “And then when we chip them, we give the wood chips away free to the community to use.” More than 800 trees were recycled through the program last year.
