McKENZIE, Tenn. — Police have found the body of a person who was being investigated in a Monday assault that left a woman dead. Police were notified around 8:30 p.m. Monday that Barbara Stone had been assaulted, according to a release from the McKenzie Police Department. She later was pronounced dead at a Nashville hospital. A relative of Stone, James Whitson, said the suspect was the son-in law of Stone. “I know he came by to visit his kids. They were staying with his mother-in-law and while he was there visiting with his kids, he shot her in the head,” Whitson said. Police said the suspect ran away after the incident involving Stone. Whitson said two children were home at the time Stone was shot. He says the oldest of the two, a six-year-old, ran to a neighbors house to call police. “It’s so sad, she was such a nice lady. She used to be a nurse and help so many people,” Whitson said. Police Chief Craig Moates confirmed Tuesday afternoon the body of a person of interest in the woman’s death has been found on train tracks within a mile of the person’s home. “We can confirm that the person of interest in the case was found deceased on the side of the train tracks. We have an idea of what happened but it is still under investigation,” Moates said. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has been contacted for assistance in the investigation. The name of the suspect will not be released until a family member identifies the body.
