Madison Co. clerk’s office employee charged with theft from office safe

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — An employee of the Madison County clerk’s office has been charged with stealing money from the office safe, according to a release from the Madison County Sheriff’s Office. Ashley Nicole Melton, 25, of Medon, an employee of the clerk’s office, is charged with theft of property over $10,000 and tampering with evidence, according to the release. Brandon Lee Lane, 22, of Medon is charged with theft of property over $1,000 in the incident, the release states. Madison County Clerk Fred Birmingham reported the Dec. 24 incident in which a bank deposit bag was missing from the office safe. The sheriff’s office investigated and found Melton had taken the bank bag containing checks and cash, according to the release. Melton and Lane are scheduled to be arraigned at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 9.
