JACKSON, Tenn.– Sacred Heart of Jesus High School gave students a half day off on Wednesday. The school said they made this decision after seeing an abnormal number of students with the flu or leaving with symptoms of the flu. “The past three days we have seen a large number of students with flu-like symptoms. As a pre-cautionary measure we decided to have an early dismissal,” Principal Michael Beauregard said. Beauregard said nearly a quarter of the 82 students who attend the high school were absent or left school with symptoms. He says the school had to postpone one of their basketball games because half the team was sick. “In all of my experience, I have never seen this big of an issue with the flu. We just want the kids to get better and prevent a bigger outbreak from happening,” Beauregard said. Teachers stayed after the dismissal to wipe down their classroom and Beauregard said the school will undergo a thorough cleaning to help prevent other kids from getting the flu. Beauregard said parents were receptive to the action taken by the school. He said he hopes students will take the extra time to rest up and be able to take care of themselves before school returns to a normal schedule Thursday. “We don’t for see this as along term problem and we do have a regular full day of school tomorrow. We are aware that we may have a reduced number of students but we will have school,” Beauregard said.
