JACKSON, Tenn. – Former Union University athletic director David Blackstock is dealing with a severe bleeding in his brain, according to the school’s news release. Blackstock had surgery on Thursday afternoon at Jackson Madison County General Hospital.. “Everybody that has ever known him knows he’s quick witted, makes people laugh and he genuinely cares about people”, said current AD Tommy Sadler. Sadler was with Blackstock when he was rushed to the emergency room Tuesday night. The two have had lunch together every week for over 20 years. “He was important not only to the Union family, but the West Tennessee family. Blackstock is one of the most iconic figures not only in Jackson, but in West Tennessee. He’s been known here for basketball for years,” said Sadler. As Union women’s basketball coach, the 72-year old compiled a 509-89 record over 17 seasons. Dr. Blackstock was also named NAIA Coach of the Year in 1998 and was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1999. According to the news release, doctors say it will be 24-48 hours before it will be known if the surgery was successful.
