BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — A shooting Tuesday evening on Thomas Street in Brownsville had businesses suffering consequences the next day. Brownsville police said Tuesday around 8:30 p.m. they received a call concerning gunfire on Thomas Street near Fairgrounds Road. The two victims were walking to a local store when they were approached by a dark SUV. Three men exited the vehicle and opened fire. The two victims suffered minor injuries and ran to safety. Police said they recovered 26 shell casings from the scene. “Normally we have our Neighborhood Watch meeting at this building,” said City Alderman Tom Averyheart, who owns property hit by the gunfire. “Plus we have a couple of men teaching small children karate and how to walk away from conflict.” He said the children in the karate class left only half an hour before the gunfire started. “It was a fairly large crime scene,” said Brownsville Police Capt. Chuck Willis. “We had to shut down the street between Thomas and Thorton.” Averyheart said this is why it is important the children of Brownsville understand how to prevent a conflict from escalating. “Our children need to be taught how to get in a conflict and get out of it without causing havoc,” Averyheart said. Willis urged anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at (731) 772-2274.
